Does anyone know about small hedges?

DH and I have decided that we want to replace our fences with a hedge, because we think it will look nicer and be cheaper in the long run.

We want something that we will be able to prune quite low, say to the level of a parterre hedge (thisis to fit the style of the street at the front of the house) but also have grow to about one to one and a half metres tall.

DH is very set on having something that flowers. It also needs to be resistant to strong winds and relatively cheap and easy to maintain as neither of us have grown a hedge before.

We are thinking at the moment of a portugese laurel. Do you think that would work? Or is there something else that might be better.

Have a look at hebes, there are several varieties, large and small, some with variegated leaves and are easy to prune.

What about escallonia? Tough, can be pruned and has pale or darker pink flowers.

Thanks for those suggestions. I will have a look.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether the laurel would be ok?
