Evergreens for back of a border

Hi everyone

I am fairly new to gardening and am looking for some advice as to some good evergreen shrubs for the back of my border. Garden is small, East facing although the border is along the back. It is a fairly sunny border with partial shade.

I'm wanting to find something to replace some drimys lanceolata that I was recommended but really haven't thrived - preferably something with a little height ( it is to go between some tall, slender magnolia trees) and that is attractive in winter. I also have small children so not poisonous!

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be most grateful!

I have laurel hedging in mine. It's evergreen and very fast growing.

Look at Escallonia too. Mine is called Golden Ellen, it has an evergreen yellowish leaf and pink flower during the Summer.

Escallonia is fast growing to form like a hedge, evergreen and it flowers.

Camellia (if you have acid soil)
Choisya - ordinary or the golden form Sundance
Fatsia
Pittosporum - lots of variety
