Slugs/snails

Does any one do anything about the slugs/snails in their garden. My children's paddling pool was left out over night (forgot about it) it was empty but is now got loads of snails on it! Ick does anyone do anything to get rid of them in the garden if so what??

Beer traps, pick them and drown them in soapy water, set a board trap by lying it in your garden (you could also smear it with a type of bait) where the slugs are, flipping it over at night, picking them off or squishing them. OR you could accidentally squish one with your bare foot as I did last night, absolutely disgusting but at least thats one less bastard to elimate
