HI all,
I wasn't sure where to put this but I'm hoping for some help identifying this flying insect as there are quite a few round here and I'm worried about my masonry bees as I haven't seen half as many this year. I'm wondering if this beast is scaring them off.
At first I thought it was a wasp but it was much bigger like a large bumble bee.
I've looked on Internet and plenty of sites help you identify pests but I'm not getting much joy.

Thank you

It was like one of those hovering fly things that hover over you being nosy then fly off at great speed but it was much bigger.

Stop press - I've found out. I was looking at bees and wasps when I should have looked at hoverflys. It's a volucella inanis (large hoverfly) and harmless to my masonry bees.

Bit difficult to see from your picture but I think that it's a hoverfly, either Volucella zonaria or Volucella inanis.
