Plants for kids

I am looking for something to grow for children, sunflowers are always a huge hit because they're so colourful and tall, any ideas for flowers to grow that will appeal to children?

For right now, or in general?
Marigolds
Nasturtiums
Herbs that smell nice and have butterfly/bee friendly flowers
Sweet peas
Vegetables, like courgettes.

Seeds for next year : Candytuft, Clarkia and California poppy. All are pretty flowers and easily grown in pots or the open ground.

Right now would be great but also in general. Thanks for the ideas x

You can sow lettuce now, in a sheltered spot they will grow until the Autumn. Mixed varieties would be fun.
