slug/snails and my petunias

I have some wooden/twig decorative baskets that attach to a wall in our garden. They look lovely for a few days and then the slugs/snails take effect. They get in and nibble away. I have put some slug pellets around the plants in a bid to get them before they get to the plants, but they still keep reappearing. How can i stop them entering the baskets from the wall. Any top tips?

I've totally given up with petunias now, they are just slug grub. Tried everything, they even managed to slither into a hanging basket dangling from chains six feet up a tree last year.

Plant something else next time - that's my tip. (Sorry, not very helpful!).
