Planting on NDN's trellis

I want to ask NDN if this is okay, but not sure if it's cheeky, so thought I would check here first.

The set up is this - two houses, we own both and NDN rent off us. We used to rent out our house too, but moved in here ourselves recently. At one point, NDN had a nightmare neighbour in our house, and asked if they could erect a low fence in the front garden, which they did. I think we supplied the wood and FIL helped fit it, but I can't remember. The fence is a picket all the way down, but with a few panels of trellis at the top before the picket starts. They don't have anything growing on it though.

We are in the process of renovating our front garden, and I'd really like a climbing rose or similar in the spot where the trellis is. Would it be really cheeky to ask to grow something on their trellis, or should we be putting our own trellis up in front of it?

I wouldn't actually ask, I'd just plant it.
They can then choose to cut back anything that grows through to their side if they don't like it.

I'd ask just to be polite, but doubt they'd say no.

Under normal circumstances I wouldn't plant anything as the plant could ultimately cause the trellis to break under the weight /bad weather etc), but since you own the property then I would do it (but consult the tenants). I would probably avoid a rose becauae of the prickles or anything that is known to give allergies. We have a potato vine we inherited that is fairly unassuming but gives a nice white flower. But I LOVE jasmine. A passionfruit would be cool too.

Don't whatever you do plant an ivy. We had this in our last rented place and it took over!!
