I am pretty new to gardening and am trying to plant our small courtyard garden with a scent theme. Yesterday I saw (and smelt) this... can someone tell me what it is?
Thanks!

May be lilac? My (struggling in a container) pink lilac looks just like this, the flowers not dense cones like a healthy one, but still smell nice. Although flowers finished couple of weeks ago (NE England) so I may be wrong and I'm no expert so hopefully someone more confident along soon!

It looks like a Deutzia, it's a highly scented shrub that flowers about this time of year. It's easily found in garden centres and on line.

@jt05 that's exactly what it is! It's the perfect plant for our garden and I have the perfect spot for it! Thank you!

Glad to have been able to help. 😊

I'm not convinced. Those long protruding stamens, and flowering late July?

How about this

Now you mention it, you could be rightTrethew. A larger picture of the whole shrub might solve the mystery. Either way both are lovely plants.
