Will grass grow on an old bonfire site?

We've got a large patch in our garden that has had bonfires on it for a year or so, mainly old wood from our house renovations. I've cleared all the ash away to dispose of, as I've no idea what the builders put on it. I want to grass this patch now, but seem to remember someone telling me nothing will grow! Is this true? Can I just scarify the ground and sprinkle grass seed?
