Alternatives to bamboo

I'd like to add something tall and bamboo-like to my garden, but something which won't spread. It's for quite a narrow border and it's a fairly small garden.

My main aims are to add movement and sound, as well as ideally year-round height/structure.

Any ideas?

Leycesteria Formosa, Pheasant berry has a similar habit of throwing up long shoots, plus the lovely flowers and berries. I'm growing some in a pot to go along with bamboo, in order to hide next doors fence.
The good points are that it grown relatively quickly, but if you want to contain it, you just chop it down to the required height and it springs up the following year.
The bad point is that it does seed all around, but you can pot them up and give away. Or just chuck them 😥

You could look at ornamental grasses, but the taller ones also tend to be the more invasive. Worth a look through the catalogues though.

Have you thought about something on a framework or grown as a standard? Also, a water or wind feature would give you movement and sound.

Goujons, yes I was wondering about grasses. The Stipa tenuissima I already have is self seeding like crazy, but then is gorgeous and sways about and rustles in the breeze.

Loving the look of Leycesteria Formosa, JT05. I just need to have a think whether I have space for it.

I added a solar water feature recently, but it's fairly unreliable... can't afford anything more expensive though. Wind feature is a nice idea.

Leycesteria can be trimmed to grow tall and thin! You just cut off the side shoots lower down. Some people don't trim them at all and then they thicken up to make a substantial shrub. You can tell I'm a big fan!

Ooh ok that sounds manageable. I've only ever seen it as a big bushy shrub. Very tempted now!

How about Miscanthus x giganteus, or Arundo donax? Both will make
6-8 foot in one season. They will grow into bigger clumps gradually, but not run out of control
