Fig tree cuttings

I think my cuttings are dead. Parts of it snaps off so I know those bits are dead however parts are white on the inside and have quite a strong smell- are those bits still alive?

We have fig trees and dh olants new ones every year. He says it should be fine. Put it in some damp comppost out of the sun for a bit.
