What is this? ( wormy caterpillar thing)

Trimming the hawthorn hedge today and I found this. Lots of moving wriggling caterpillar type things and what look like lots of little black eggs all in a weblike structure.

DH said a moth. He removed it from the hedge as he reckons they'll destroy it and put it in a jam jar with aeration holes for the time being. Watching to see what happens...
