Does anyone know what this bug might be and how I get rid of it? There are small brown lumps all over the stem of the plant as well as brown and white bugs on the leaves.

Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the plant it's on Blush

I just know them as scale bugs. I think they live on tree sap and can damage shrubs over time.

Looks like scale bugs. They are bastards and a sod to get rid of, I felled the tree I had them on and burnt it.

Just brush them off. Can use dilute washing up liquid if you like.

Thanks so much for the info. Just had a look at the RHS site, there seem to be a few options in eradicating them. I really love this tree, hope I can somehow get rid of them with resorting to RealLemon's solution!

To be fair mine was riddled with the little bastards. It was too big for me to effectively treat it although I did try quite a few things but I was concerned they would infest my other trees and plants.

Neem oil?
But try to avoid any other insects getting near it, bees especially.
