Laying new patio over existing

Has anyone laid new patio slabs over existing slabs? It seems doable to me but when I Googled it lots of answers said you can't. Most of those posts were from builders or landscape gardeners so I'm not convinced.
Area is 20 sq m.

Well, I guess it depends on a few things.

Is the existing patio level?

What's the existing patio laid on?

Do you want the patio to be higher than it already is?

Are you doing the work yourself?

I dont think its usually thought to be a good idea. Better to make fresh foundations so that its well supported and level. If you dont I think there's more chance it will end up becoming uneven or break up over time so its a false economy.

I know every thing I ended up cutting corners on with my house has ended up more costly in the end.
