Sketching out a garden

The gardening books I've started to read all tell me to make a sketch on squared paper of my garden, and draw in what is planted. So this is what I am going to do! I am not tech savvy, so an app for the same purpose won't work for me. But how on earth am I supposed to fit the details I need onto a piece of A4 or even A3 squared paper? Our garden is about 100 foot long by 40 foot wide. There are wide beds the whole length of the garden as well as beds the width of the garden after the patio, either side of the steps leading onto the grass. The beds are deep. I have small and established shrubs, climbers, trailers, ground cover etc. I am a complete novice gardener, just starting to work things out by trial and error.

What is the answer please?!

I printed out a diagram of my garden onto an A5 piece of paper to stick in my journal :) I label areas A, B, C, D, etc and write the detailed description on an adjacent piece of paper. Hope that helps.

Of course. I was thinking for some reason that I had to get the whole garden on one sheet, all to scale, including the grass. Your approach makes complete sense. Thank you.
