Gardening book for beginners - any recommendations?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of buying a house which has a significantly bigger garden than where I live now. It's mainly lawn with some flower borders but there is a section which I think would be great for some raised beds for growing veg. I am equal parts excited and daunted by this extra space and all the potential, so would like to buy a book that covers the basics of gardening/growing. Any recommendations? Thanks 😊

I have two brilliant ones that MIL gave me last year. I'll check the names when I get home. One is an encyclopaedia of plants, and the other is a month by month guide of what to do in the garden. Both very useful!

Kim Wilde's First Time Gardener is very good. She's a brilliant gardener with a great eye for design. I also think Alan Titchmarsh write a couple of How to be a Gardener books a few years ago which are also excellent.

I've also found YouTube to be helpful with specific things if I need a visual on how to plant/prune a specific plant, for example. I only started last year and it's daunting but mistakes are a lot more forgiving in gardening than anything else!

Thank you all - helpful recommendations! Hadn't thought of YouTube so that's a good call too 👍🏻

These are the ones I've got. The month-by-month one is by Ian Spence, but I can't find an author's name on the other!?

Thanks Gin - I should have known that DK would have had a good one!

I'm a novice gardener too, so I was looking for book recommendations a couple of months back. I gas a similar thread and Alan titchmarsh's double volume of How to be a Complete Gardener was recommended. I bought it second hand on Amazon and it is great. From there I realised that it was shrubs test I was more interested in, so I bought Alan's Flowering Shrubs book, and Hesayon - The Tree and Shrub Expert, both second hand on Amazon. They've all been so useful.

The RHS do lots of books, including small ones on individual topics or plants, up to large encyclopaedias.

And most plants, fruit and veg have their enthusiasts web sites.
