Please could anyone settle an arguement as to whether this is a plant or weed. It seems to be taking over. Love the colour it adds either way. Thank you

Looks like a Kerrie Japonica, definitely a plant. It can spread which is why some people don't like it. I like it because it is colourful when there's not much about. Also it makes a good cut flower.

I'm wondering whether it is Corchorus olitorius, commonly known as Jews mallow. I treat it as a weed as it spreads a lot in my garden, and I'm also trying to have more of a theme of colours that doesn't include yellow. I see it in lots of gardens near me though and I think I'm in the minority in cutting it back as much as I do.

It is kerria japonica. (Common name soldier's button.)
It's quite prolific, but you can keep it contained by cutting any unwanted stems back to the ground.
I'd keep it!
