What flowers are in bloom in May?

It is my son's baptism on May 20th and we're having a spread in the garden afterwards (weather permitting). I'd like to plant some tubs of plants/flowers and wondered what will be in season in mid May and good for either a tub or border?
Any tips would be much appreciated

Well you won't have time to get things established. Spring bulbs are good - but you will have to buy them in pots already growing - late tulips, bluebells, irises. Clematis montana is out around then here in Yorkshire.

go to nursery / garden centre nearer the time and buy some bedding plants. if you are desperate or bigger of budget they'll have some ready planted for you. actually, might even be worth asking them now.

bluebells definitely. you can buy them 'in the green ' at the moment. also yellow primroses

Daffodils & snow drops are in our garden at the minute

But daffs and snowdrops will be overy by May. If you leave it very last minute you could plant out your bedders. Whereabouts in the country are you? What are the chances of a late frost?

Thank you for all the tips
Bozza, I'm in Yorkshire too.
Bluebells I think would be lovely and we do have some in the garden. Can you buy them too though, they're not something I'd expect to see in a garden centre?

I think you might be able to get them mail order. But the problem is that they might not flower so well the first year. I reckon you could get away with putting bedding plants out the weekend before the christening, assuming you can find some that are in flower already. I have started putting mine out mid May now. We never seem to have a frost so late anymore.
