I'm hoping I can upload a photo in a mo - the app keeps crashing when I try!

This is likely to have arrived c/o bird poop, but I can't work out what it is. Are you able to help, please?

Might be Meadowsweet, grows a lovely scented flower like cow parsley about 6' high? I will compare it to the one in my garden tomorrow. It seeds itself everywhere 🙂

Poppy ?

JillJ72 · 01/05/2017 21:26

Ooo, keep them coming - and thank you!

I've just googled meadowsweet and the leaves don't seem to tie in with that. These leaves are really quite soft and delicate, as in not tough! I will let this grow as I'm curious - we've has various bird poop successes in this house - a (now big) wild rose, elderberry, bergamot, sunflowers and calendula.

Googling poppy leaves....

I think it's one of those yellow poppies.

kingjofferyworksintescos · 02/05/2017 09:25

I thought poppy as they can be quite variable in leaf structure and are pretty resilient as seeds , looking at the larger plant it won't be long before you get flowering stems if it's poppy

JillJ72 · 02/05/2017 18:15

Thank you - I do love poppies so fingers crossed - I shall come back with a photo when the plant does the big reveal!

It's a sanguisorba. Tall stems, red flowers.

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 11/05/2017 06:23

Welsh poppy. Yellow flowers, self seeds everywhere.

JillJ72 · 11/05/2017 06:31

Still waiting for flowers so I can share and we have an answer - thanks for the suggestions!

Looks like ground elder to me.
Rampant weed that spreads like wildfire and is very hard to get rid of. Roots trail sideways under the soil to pop up elsewhere.

thatdearoctopus · 11/05/2017 09:19

Ground elder doesn't have flowers so that would rule it out.

JT05 · 11/05/2017 11:16

My ground elder, if I allow it, has white flowers in July. I cut them off to avoid seeds.

JillJ72 · 05/06/2017 19:46

Hi there, pleased to say it's a poppy - a wild red poppy, Stoked as it's one of my favourite flowers. I'll be collecting the seed heads to sow, and will try digging the plants up when they've finished flowering, to see if they'll survive through to next year. Thanks for your help with guessing!

Yeah it will just self seed if you leave the heads to become seeds. Had a massive patch this year. Bees love em.

Cheep

I have tried to grow some Californian poppies from seed and they look dead now I have thinned them.

Disheartening when you see them growing in random places every where!
