What does west or east facing mean?

Okay, at the risk of sounding think, what does west or east facing mean? Looking at buying a climber to go over a fence next to my patio area, and we've had problems with plants surviving there before so trying to be a bit more scientific than 'oooh that looks pretty' this time.

So, is West facing the side of the garden the fence is on, or the direction that the plant/flowers will look at (i.e. East)?

The side iit is facing. So in the morning the sun rises in the East, so the fence on that side is West Facing. Other side where it gets evening sun is East Facing. What is more important with regard to plants failing is whether they are planted at the North End of the fence, cold and shady, or the South End, hot and dry.

Stand with your back to the wall/fence. Which direction are you facing?
