There are several 'zones' of planting around a pond, from true aquatics that like their feet in water, to bog garden plants that like things really damp, to moisture-loving plants for a slightly drier soil. Each 'zone' has slightly different plants.

Beth Chatto's 'Damp Garden' is a really good book on this. One must-have plant for me is Caltha Palustris - it's a lovely shot of yellow! In Suffolk, we used to call them 'mollyblobs'.
