Happy Christmas Shove! I hope you will continue with your great advice in 2017 for us? I'm pondering getting out of my dressing gown and shovelling some muck today to burn off the mince pies... want to get ahead in the garden before spring!

It is a fabulous day here in London. I have just say outside. In my coat, of course, with a big mug of coffee and a mince pie.

I'm in Berkshire, it looks lovely out but I think the wind is a bit chilly. Right I'm getting out there!

In the next couple of days, I intend to buy another amaryllis and get to the end of 2016's planting queue.

Merry Christmas from me even though I've not been on the board! I,m hoping to join as we move recently into a house with a larger garden which has mature beds and also 6 allotment raised beds - I.m a compete novice and no idea where to start! It's been a glorious sunny winter day here in Nottinghamshire.

Indeed we are - and the potting shed is open pretty much round the clock for gardening chat and socialising!

Aw, you are all so kind! Pithivier- your new garden will be a forum highlight for 2017, I am sure of it. The design is inspired!

Porcupine- hope you enjoyed some muck shovelling. I was at it on Boxing Day, which was crisp and clear. It made me feel less guilty about the frankly obscene amounts of cheese I have eaten!

Gin- I have those seeds for you!! All dried now. DM me your address and I will post!!

Book- lovely book is so right about this being the friendliest bit of Mumsnet (but too modest to acknowledge her part in making it so!

Maud- I'm impressed by the planting queue idea! Several people have told me to organise my seeds this way, will give it a go!!

Hooray for a new joiner, Mrsbungle, please do jump in! You will quickly find out that there are loads and loads of very knowledgeable people around our virtual sheds! You will also quickly discover I am sadly not one of them, but I try to make up for it with enthusiasm!! :) Also, unlike other parts of the site, you absolutely don't have to read the whole thread to do so. Just get stuck in!!

You may overestimate the virtues of the planting queue, Shove! What it is, is testimony to my tendency to acquire new planty treasures without necessarily having the time to plant them. But I'm nearly caught up, so just have a few to do (which, in my sloth, I didn't do yesterday but will try to do today).

Do drop into the potting shed, everyone. I'm going to break out the virtual mince pies and Buck's Fizz.
