herbs in garden

Wonder if anyone can help me?
Fed up of what feels like weekly buying basil/parsley etc and wondered if I could plant the supermarket bought fresh plants in the garden and how is best to care for them?
I was thinking of putting them in a pot as I don't have flower bed/soil areas in my garden.

Any advice greatly received!!

You can grow lots of herbs in pots though the supermarket ones aren't always the best because they have been forced and might not be so strong. You could probably get something better from a decent garden centre. I usually put them into larger pots or hanging baskets with good compost and they come back each year.

Ones that have worked well for me are: flat leaf parsley, mint, sage, thyme (all different kinds of the last three), oregano, lemongrass, chives.

Ones that I always struggle with: basil, coriander.

Thank you for that!! Your probably right I'm sure the quality is poor so ill make a trip to the garden centre this week!

I've repotted basil, mint and chives from the supermarket pots. They tend to do poorly because they are jammed in together with little soil. I water them, then split them up into larger pots with good compost. Seems to work.

I've grown decent basil plants by rooting a few sprigs off a supermarket plant in a glass of water on the windowledge and then potting up. I discovered this by accident when saving some sprigs which had started to rot at the base - basil roots in water really easily. Not sure if any other herbs do (most of the other things I use I've got in the garden anyway - bought from garden centre and in tubs because I've got a dog ... and mint should always be in a tub to stop it taking over the garden!).

Coriander always bolts if I try it outdoors, don't know if there's any way to avoid that.
