Can anyone identify this?

Hi this is my first post although I've been reading threads here for a while. I got this in a box at a fair - it's not labelled and I don't know what conditions it would like. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Yes it's pretty isn't it? I'm hoping someone will come along who knows what it is so I don't inadvertently kill it by putting it in the wrong place.

I also like your tablecloth! The plant looks familiar.. I'll ask my grandfather if no one has answered by the time in get chance!

is the stem green and sappy or is in browner and harder? Rub one of the leaves...is it pungent?

I don't think it's a tomato - the leaf pattern is very sharply pointed. And it seems too elongated a leaf for a marigold. I might have to plant it and see what happens next. Thanks for all your ideas though - and the compliments on the tablecloth, it was a little kids' version of twister that they grew out of so I've upcycled it to be the garden tablecloth!

Have tries reverse imaging but am only getting pictures that look like your tablecloth! If you take a picture with a plain background you might have some luck doing it.

The stem is a dark red brown at the base and lightens into green nearer the top. It's only a tiddler of a plant so far (3inches or so) but the stem is already quite woody. Does that help narrow it down at all?

If its woody then it wont be marigold.
does it smell ? Rub a leaf between your fingers and have a sniff

They have no perceptible smell. The leaves are soft, almost velvety to the touch, but not pungent at all. It's a mystery!

Thanks so much everyone - I think it might be a form of melianthus. I hadn't quite realised it might grow to 7' - I'm very short of space for shrubs - but I will try it in a largish pot and see what it does.
