Mushrooms appearing on the lawn: help!

Exactly that really. I've no idea why/where they've come from but we've a definite colony of mushrooms on the lawn in the back garden. As we have a puppy I'm a bit concerned about this. He often goes off by himself during his night-time constitutional. Would digging up the mushrooms work to eliminate them or is there something else needed to prevent recurrence? Any advice gratefully received!

I think it's the weather, unfortunately. Mushrooms are basically the fruit of the fungus that lives underground, and they fruit when conditions are right. So damp and dank.

If you're worried, you could always pick of the mushroom and throw away.
And if you wanted to prevent it, you'd have to increase drainage in the lawn, maybe let more light in if there are shaded bits, and perhaps get rid of thatch in the grass, as they 'feed' on dead organic material.

I just think they're inevitable when there is endless rain and not much sun.
