Peonies - where to plant?

Just bought 2 small peonies on offer in supermarket.

I read that they don't like to be moved so am wondering where to put them?

I have a gap between 2 hebes flanking steps up to house (so a slope) which is sunny all day.

Or I have another slope at the back of house which already houses various shrubs, roses and a small hydrangea (east facing so sunny for part of the day).

Which is best for peonies and would they go with hebes?

Thanks Smile

I assume they are herbaceous paeonies and not tree paeonies - do they have a woody frame work like a shrub ? They are very unlikely to be tree ones if they came from a supermarket and were quite cheap, but I'm just double checking .

They like a heavy rich soil and about 6 hours sun a day . Although I find they do well for me in semi shade - I have very rich soil

How big is the gap between your hebes and what is the soil like ?

Hebes can be short lived plants and paeonies are the opposite , they are very long lived .

Sounds like they might be better in your shrub border

I think they are herbaceous (Sarah Berndhart).

Soil is free draining and reasonably good condition.

Gap between hebes about 2 feet or a little more

Definitely the border, because that peony will grow to about a meter wide and high . Dig in lots of compost first and search you tube to see video on how to plant it - they need to be the right depth or they won't flower .

You'll probably need to stake it later as the flowers are so big - it will be lovely :-)

I love peonies!

Rojak · 14/06/2016 23:56

It was Lidl & I think they were £5.99 each
