How to keep squirrels off my balcony

I am in the middle house of a new build block. There are no overhanging trees. I have no idea how the squirrels are getting onto our balcony.
They are sleeping in our hanging basket and digging in our tomato pots and strawberry pots.
Is there anything I can do to discourage them?

Hahaha! Oh they are mischievous. They can leap a long, long way, so my guess it that balcony to balcony is no problem at all for them.

I don't have much expertise in this area - I think it's much harder when you have a balcony than a garden because everything is so exposed. I've heard that chilli pepper is supposed to work, but I have no idea if this is true. Sometimes the only thing you can do is to grow things that the animal doesn't really like to eat.
