Can i put slate or wood chips over decking?

We have a rectangular decked garden that is split in two sections by a step, both sections are covered by rather old decking. There is concrete underneath the decking and getting rid of it isn't an option. I was thinking of covering one of the decked sections with either slate or wood chips just to brighten it up and for a bit of variation, but was wondering if there are any cons to it (apart from the cost)... Will the deck rot if there are wood chips over it?

I think a covering of either stone or woodchips will tend to trap moisture and make it rot. Sorry Sad

Covering it with loads of planted pots might be a better idea. Done well, this can look really stunning.

I bought a house with a lovely yard covered in stone chips. The stone chips managed to get into the drains and clog everything. It's a nightmare for most people if you're thinking of selling.

Either rip up the decking, re skim the concrete and paint it white or like previous poster said, plant pots.
