structured patio plants

South and east facing patio, I'd like to put some sort of structural plants in pots - fairly large. Given I live in central England is there anything hardy enough you'd recommend?

I recently visited a garden where there were no herbaceous borders, just structural plants - like one giant patio. They had Azaleas and Rhododendrons in pots which looks great. They had bamboo, astelia chathamica, and a small Scots pine, - all in pots. All of them should be hardy enough for central England. Good luck.

What about a viburnum? You can get a standard one, which would look great in a planter- lovely blossoms.
