What does it take to grow spring onions?

I have tried for the past couple of years to grow a few spring onions. I actually got some to germinate by growing them in a pot last year but they were in most of the summer and didn't come to much so composted them.

Tips?

I can grow onions, shallots, leeks etc so assume my soil is ok. Could it be a light issue? the Veg plot is only in full sun for a few hours each day.

HOw about trying them in pots? I did that last yr and they were great. Radishes do really well in pots too.

I tried them in pots this year and at least they grew, just not very much. Can't grow radishes either.
