Seed mixes- how good?

I love the idea of a fairly wild cottage/wildflower garden and have seen the seed mix boxes fairly cheap. Is it as simple as throwing the seed randomly and hey presto?

Yes it can be. I had some lovely wild flowers in my little town garden. I just sprinkled Cornflowers and Nigella seeds into the ground. I did it each year and would sprinkle the seed heads too.
