Fern help please

We moved into a new house in November- I'm trying to find my way round the garden but it's proving tricky. I'm even scared to pull weeds in case they aren't... Anyway we have ferns in a raised bed beside heather, the ferns are dead, should I be cutting the dead stuff off? Will be back shortly with pics of unidentifiable climbers...

Yep, trim the leaves off the ferns at the base of the stalk this time of year. Try not to damage the central section, as this year's growth will soon spiral out from there - it's a lovely thing to watch day-by-day as they unfurl. They will appreciate a mulch of compost around the base (but not on top of the crown).
