What is this curious fruit bush?

I've seen several in front suburban front gardens so it's fairly common. No pictures I'm afraid but I'll describe it:

Smallish bush, sometimes grown as a hedge, with bright pink (almost highlighter pen pink) flowers, and fruits that look a bit like apples but slightly smaller. The fruit are very hard and green through summer and autumn with a sharp but perfumy scent. They hang on the tree over winter and eventually turn yellow.

I've wondered about it for ages, saw another one today and thought I'd try asking!

Crab apple?

Sounds like a quince.

Could be a crab apple. The trees I know as crab apples have small fruits, though, ping-pong ball sized. This has fruit that are close to eating apple size.

Don't quinces have great big yellow fruit shaped like pears but larger? I've never seen a quince tree but I've bought the fruit. Its definitely smallish and bushy rather than tall and tree-y.

Not meaning to rubbish your suggestions, by the way, as I have no idea and either of you could be right!

Could it be a Japanese quince - Chaenomeles ?

Ie as opposed to a 'proper' quince (Cydonia) that you described?
