I would be interested in suggestions for books for gardeners

beth chatto's gravel garden is a good book

While this does not apply to the northern hemisphere, I'm ordering "There Is No Excuse for Ugliness" by Clive Blazey. A splendid rant about the current state of Australian suburban gardens, with many recommendations about what should be done.

He is wrong about native trees, though.

Sounds interesting
I went past Ealing the other day.
Beautiful old double fronted period houses.
Every single front 'garden' paved over to provide hard standing for 3 or more cars. Very sad.
I do think the front garden needs a revival
Not that I can talk
The peacock buddlea is developing, the Cornus needs serious pruning to provide fire-like colour (at present the overgrown stems are a darkish red) and the Azaela Luteum is struggling alongside the Generous Gardener climbing rose. This is the outcome of serious lack of any design sense on my part whatsoever.
