We've just moved house and for the first time ever we have our own garden which is very exciting but also a bit scary because we have no idea what to do with it!

It's mostly lawn at the moment with a sycamore and two rowan trees. I would really like to plant some flowering plants and some shrubs with colourful or interesting foliage but i don't really know where to start.

Ideas? The soil is peaty and its a cool and shaded garden albeit south facing.

I have a thread about stuff that works well in shade - it's called 'Shady Characters'

I keep meaning to add to it, but forget! Blush
