Harvesting onions?

We were given some onion sets and planted them out at the bottom of the garden, first time ever tried to grow them. I think they must be ready now although they are pretty small by the looks of it. Sounds a silly question, but can they be eaten right away or do they need to be stored for a bit?

usually, you leave onions to dry out , so gently lift them out, then leave to dry for anything from a week , let air get around them , so not on the ground. The skins will harden, and the will keep for longer
