Tall porch planter

I'm a complete gardening novice! I'm going to put a tall planter in the front porch. Apart from box plant, what evergreen plant or grass could i put in it? And what sort of pot does it need to be to stand the winter weather-ie plastic, pot, (albeit it'll be sheltered in the porch)? Thanks!

You can get lots of pots that will withstand the winter - even terracotta ones will, if they have been put together properly (e.g. Yorkshire Flower Pots). It really depends on what kind of style you want! I've even heard that some of the plastic pots are nice, though I have yet to believe this and am a plastic skeptic on the whole!

What way does your porch face and how good are you are remembering to water?

(To be honest, I often think box looks like 'enough' on its own in a pot. It's so striking that way.

One grass often paired with it is stipa tenuissima, because it's very wavy and soft and the box is very clipped so you get the contrast. But this only really works over a larger area and not in a pot. A more traditional pairing would be ivy in one of those lead-look ones. Not my style, but can look nice with a period house).

Thanks shove. It's an East facing porch. I quite like the architectural look of the box shrub. But I've just seen pictures of that grass with alliums in a border and it looks fab! Thanks

The ones on pinterest? Me too! I'm doing that in my garden! Just potted on all the little grass seedlings.
