Kale and Potatoes

I use to be good at gardening, but then I had DD. DH bought me a large cage for our veggie patch to keep the cats off and get me back into it.

Dug up my first row of spuds and they are all nobly and have holes in them! Very disappointed.

And I'm getting fed up of having to pick through the kale and wash each leaf carefully because of all the spiders, bettles and other insects hiding in the curls. Plus they're full of holes. Have made kale soup this morning but can't shake the idea I'm eating kale and bug soup.

It never use to be like this. Any advise?

Maybe the cage is also keeping off the birds which would otherwise be eating the creepy crawlies.

It was to keep the cats off as I was digging in poo and all my seedlings kept being dug up. Hmmm.
