Recommended gardening/design books

Haven't really gardened for years but we've moved into a house with really overgrown mature garden. That aspect is coming under control and it's lovely but I'd like to get ideas for plants for the different areas, and maybe design elements too. We don't want to do a major overhaul and transformation, but need inspiration and advice on what would suit. Any suggestions for books or other resources?

We use Readers Digest 'Gardening Year' which covers the year month by month, and what to do when, if an easy to use format.

For more creative, artistic aspects try the RHS web site and their books, Gardener's World, or anything by your favourite TV gardener. Also look at National Trust sites.

I really like the Alan Titchmarsh 'How to Garden' series - they're really informative, but easy to read. Plus, you can just choose the books that cover what you're particularly interested in.

if you want 'coffee table style' books for wonderful photos and inspiration I bought (sometime ago now) books by Rosemary Verey who has now died - some of the gardens she designed, including her own, were beautiful. You could look in the local library first, which is where I found them, and then if you find one you like you could buy it.

Thanks erm I love a coffee table book - may have just ordered two more! (Used, 1p + delivery so not too extravagant.
