Too late to sew tomatoes?

Hi, I moved house last year and greenhouse has just gone up. I normally start my toms in February indoors and lovingly care for them for planting out into greenhouse by April, covering with fleece etc on the cold nights. I live in SE England, but is it still too late to sew toms from scratch? Was going to order some plug plants but a local lady when I enquired, told me just to sew. I don't want to waste time with it if it's too late, no time for experimentation at the mo as building work starting soon.

Thoughts?

I'm going to do mine tonight !

Hope not! My seedlings got eaten by slugs so I've had to start again.

Sounds tricky, and possibly messy Grin

What are you going to sew them to? Grin I would imagine stitching tomatoes to things would get fairly messy.

Great minds!

Personally, I'd say it is a bit on the late side, maybe better to buy plants for this year.

Hello again, I completely apologise for the typo, I woke up in a cold sweat the other night knowing what I had done. I can't even use the excuse that I was sewing at the time because my skills lie elsewhere, shall we say.

On the issue of tomatoes, I've taken a tip from the April 2010 Gardeners World magazine and I've taken the sideshoots from the plants I bought and put them into a cm of water. Apparently they may grow roots which I can then plant out as new plants. A few days on and they still look good fingers crossed.
