What tree is in my garden?

It has a peeling bark like a silver birch, but instead of white, it's deep burgundy red. At first, I thought it was a red birch tree... but the pics online look very different.

Note: house is a new build, so it was planted there by the developer.

Can you post a photo?

Is it Prunus serrula?

Bolshybookworm · 06/04/2015 08:55

Or acer griseum? What do the leaves look like (if they're out yet)?

I use a great app called Plantsnapp when I need to identify a plant. They've done everything in my garden now! The first 3 are free.

If it is acer griseum [paper bark maple] or prunus serrula [tibetan cherry] then you are a very lucky bunny.

Any pics of the bark itself or the leaves?

Leaves not yet out, but I looked again - now that a lot of the bark has "renewed", it looks a lot more like a red birch tree...

Looks like a cherry to me, it will be easier to tell when the leaves are out. They're lovely trees!

AlternativeTentacles · 06/04/2015 17:11

Prunus serrula. Peel that bark and keep it looking shiny and red. You lucky thing!

Thank you, Mumsnetters!!!

Ooh Tibetan cherry! Or, as Alternative Tentacles says, Prunus Serrula. They are expensive!! Very nice! I'm jealous :)
