Holey sycamores, what has caused this?

My two lovely old sycamores are covered in numerous tiny holes. The bark comes away easily from the trunks in big crumbly chunks. Anybody have any idea why this may be happening? Today was the start of Easter project tree house too....

i have no idea, sorry, but i initially read your thread title as an exclamation of amazement, like "holy sycamores, batman!"
