Cost of having a regular gardener???

To those who have a regular gardener, or those who are gardeners; I am wondering what sort of costs might be involved in having a gardener come regularly to do general maintenance? (We're in Hertfordshire)

We've got a thin but long (200ft) garden. I'm guessing that approximately 3 hours, every 2 weeks would be about what's needed to keep the grass mowed, borders and hedges tidy.

(I haven't yet started contacting anyone for quotes.. I don't have a clue what the average going rate is for gardeners, so just trying to gauge whether I might be able to afford this or not)

We pay £10 an hour - 2 hrs every 2 weeks. They do maintenance and will do extras if directed and bring all their own tools/ mower

We pay £100 per day. That's for a full day.

I would say that you should get them to tell you how long they think it will take. IME gardeners can sometimes be hard at it all day and it won't necessarily look like much has happened. 3 hours every 2 weeks isn't that much.

3hrs every fortnight in the autumn would be enough but if you have long borders then they will need to do more in the spring and summer.

Thank you, this is good to know.

As a professional gardener, I work on most of my gardens from March to November.
Sometimes I go back to do a few winter tidy up jobs and any winter pruning.

By the end of April I am working full pelt and will do all summer.

We paid £10 an hour two years ago, but he put it up to £12.50 an hour last year.

We still paid him the same amount, and told him to adjust the time accordingly.
