What's the difference? I have just started doing a lot of gardening..ie, planting seeds!
I don't understand the difference between john innes types, compost, potting soil, soil free, mulch, peat free, loam based, nitrogen rich and all the million other types of kinds of, well, dirt to plant plants and seeds in?

Can anyone enlighten me as to what each kind is and what they should be used for? I wander around the garden centre wondering what bag of compost type stuff I should be buying as I have no idea!

I should think the RHS, Gardeners World or similar sites will give more definitive advice than here.
