Landscape companies

What to expect - I've never used one and have a postage stamp sized back garden in a new build. I kind of know what I want but want a bit of their experience to pull it altogether.

Presumably I get a few quotes and will need to pay a bit for a design before deciding which company to use?

Just Google on the topic, say where you are, and I think there are professional bodies regulating such companies.

Obviously, the better the firm, the higher will be their charges.

Read all the 'small print', beware of cowboys; maybe ask at local garden centres. Look at the National Garden Scheme for gardens open in your area, and visit for ideas.
