I'd love to try it. They'd have to be in pots in by back garden as a) I don't have very good soil and b) the beds etc are all ornamental so we have no room for veggies.

What should I start with ?

Can I grow carrots in containers ?

When is best to sow seeds for a crop next year ?

Do I have to start the seeds off indoors (no greenhouse) ?

Cheers

Hi Nomedeplume,
We only have a small back garden but have managed to grow a variety of container veg.
Grow bags are great too.
My main ones are-tomatoes,lettuce, runner beans, peppers, onoins and a rather dodgy looking cucumber-oh strawberries too.
Im only a novice but dwarf runner beans were faboulous in a pot and had enough for plenty every couple of days.We grew them from seed and had 3 pots.Tomatoes lots too and lettuce. Im not sure what you can sow this time of year though-maybe lettuce and some herbs ?
Hopefully someone with a bit more " know " will answer that for you.
DH bought me one of those plastic greenhouses about 6 foot tall by 3 or 4 foot wide and I`ve used it lots.

We grow lettuce in an old zinc bath tub-- does that count? Got utterly sick of buying bags of salad in the shops that come from 5 drought-ridden countries and are washed in chlorine.

Oh, we want to do this too - did toms, herbs & strawberries this year ... REALLY want to try potatoes next year - tell us more about your black dustbin approach, anniediv - what do you put in the bin ito compost/manure etc mix
And also keen to do peas next year ... any hints/tips on container size etc??

I'm assuming there's not much we can be doing now ... or is someone full of exciting ideas for brussel sprout growing?!

nikkie · 02/10/2006 20:29

We used larger containers (30cm across?) and had 3-4 pea plants in , grew them up the wall/trellis
