Beginner here, can I prune back deciduous shrubs now?

My garden is very low maintenance with shrubs around the edges. They grew so much over the summer they are now too bushy and making the lawn edges die so I want to prune them back a bit. Is now a really bad time to do it? What would happen if I did?

I have no idea what they are, but they are deciduous and non-flowering.

Thanks in advance. As you can tell I know nothing about gardening!

Put up some pics so we can identify them and work out when to prune.
