Laurel hedge stripped!

I have laurel bushes at the front and back which were pruned at the start of the spring to manageable size Smile

I've just noticed they've been stripped bare in places over the summer. A lot of leaves are munched/ deformed - particularly at the growing tip. I can't see any obvious pests on inspection.

I thought laurel was pretty indestructable! What is eating them?

It did occur to me that the regrowth had slowed dramatically but I've been distracted by other things in the garden Grin

I've tried googling but I can't find any info on pests that would strip it right back to bare stalks (5-8' high). I'm guessing insecticide is the solution.

Are you talking big pests or small pests? Could it be Deer?

Small pests, it's your average suburban garden! I'm imagining a plump caterpillar Grin

:) could it be vine weevil? They can destroy laurels.
