Vegetable growing

Hi I'm wondering if anyone has any advice they'd like to offer. I'd like to start growing some vegetables I think. Have front garden which has lots of small stones on top of earth and my idea is to get some raised beds, put them on top of the stones and fill with topsoil/compost and then grow in these. I hope this will work? And wondering if best to do now, and plant some things or to wait until spring... I've been reading websites etc, but still a bit unsure how best to start.

The raised beds on top of the stones should be fine, in fact the stones will probably provide good drainage. It is a bit late to start sowing most things but you would probably be ok sowing some salady things like rocket, radishes. lettuces now. You can then spend the winter looking at seed catalogues and deciding what lovely things to grow next year.
