Ok, I've not weeded this bed for a while Grin and this is now about 6 feet. Please can you tell me what it is?

I don't have the heart to cut it down. It's just about to break out in yellow flowers.

Can you identify this one please?

It's Mullain, the spikes will bear yellow flowers and it'll self seed like crazy.

MrsLettuce · 29/07/2014 19:56

here. Spelt it wrong, of course.

Oh that's great! Thank you so much. That explains why there are a few of them.

On the wiki page it says
"western United States residents commonly refer to mullein as "cowboy toilet paper"." Grin

I was going to say it is verbascum - but now I see it's diff names for same plant!

And there are also many cultivated varieties of it, which I didn't know. Our ones get devoured by masses of caterpillars.

Mullein.

mumma24 · 03/08/2014 11:39

I was going to say verbascum too

Get it and its mates out and burn them or they will take over. The seeds spread very easily and it can invade lawns too

MrsLettuce · 03/08/2014 14:00

Ach, it's not that invasive. One needs to keep an eye but it's easy enough to keep on top of if you like them.
